Roon and Ron shine in Seoul
Sir Alex Ferguson cited the trial of partnering Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo in attack as one of the major plus-points of Friday’s 4-0 win over FC Seoul.
Both players got on the scoresheet and linked up well, adding to goals from young midfielder Chris Eagles and Patrice Evra, who was used as a left midfielder.
The United boss says pairing Rooney and Ronaldo is a system he may use away from home in the future.
“We looked at a system where we could get the qualities of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney together,” Sir Alex told MUTV. “This is a system we could maybe play away from home.
“It was interesting and they worked well together. They showed good understanding and changed positions a few times which caused their defence problems. That was a plus-point for us. Cristiano got the Man of the Match award for 45 minutes’ work!”
The heat and humidity of Seoul proved draining in the second half, but it was a first-half performance that yielded three goals without reply that pleased Sir Alex most.
“In the first half again we were pleased with the speed of the play,” he added. “It was a good start, and the first half saw our best moments. The energy, movement and intensity of our game was good, but the humidity and the heat can slow you down. It was hot out there, I felt it myself on the bench!
“It was a good result and a good performance against a team with a lot of speed in their team. We had to be aware of that because they created a few chances for themselves in the second half. In the main we are pleased.”
